I DON’T CARE

John Sanborn 2015

Perspective is a bitch. Parochial introspection aids the artist’s inspiration about the soul – but a corresponding global view is exhausting. Identity, over time, decays like an old sandwich in the refrigerator.

I do what I can but I am dumbfounded. Irony and humor serve me well to deflect the so-called serious issues; why not turn this weapon on itself? We all want to be saviors of society, but in fact we are complicit in its demise. Fix one thing, another breaks – it’s the triumph of entropy. Well, if you can’t repair the world – focus on yourself.

I Don’t Care is an ironic assessment of the current global crisis of inequity and imbalance – be it fiscal or social or just plain dumb stuff. Packaged in the form of a popular song, this work speaks a lie of indifference while aiming at the “socially responsible” bandwagon. In the age of social media we are quick to sing the slogans of revolution – but supremely slow to enact actual change.

THE CICADE

Francesca Llopis 2015

Cigarra (The cicada)
The cicada was so happy, she sang and sang through the summer.
She loved to sing and just couldn't stop.
One morning the cicada woke up frozen stiff.
"Oh my... and now, what should I do? I will either starve, or freeze to death."
And she thought: Perhaps I can ask my neighbor the ant, to help.
She knew she'd had time to spare in which to store food supplies.
But she didn't really have time for all that nonsense. She had to sing. That was important to her!
But of course, the consequence was a sad one:
"Now I will die, whether I have a place to drop dead or not."
The cicada called on her neighbor.
"What do ya want?" asked the ant, anticipating the answer.
"I'm hungry and freezing to death."
"So... how's that any of my business?" The ant shrugged her shoulders.
"What did you do all summer when you could've prepared for winter?"
"I sang and sang the whole day long", the cicada answered, showing no shame at all.
"And what now?" asked the ant, feigning innocence.
The cicada puckered her lips as usual and shrugged her own shoulders.
"So you sang? Cute. Now why don't you dance, dear?"

In recent times, the fable has again been put to political use by both sides in the social debate between the enterprise culture and those who consider the advantaged have a responsibility towards the disadvantaged.
A modern satirical version of the story, has the grasshopper calling a press conference at the beginning of the winter to complain about socio-economic inequity, and being given the ant's house.

AROUND THE PLATTER

V.G.Venugopal 2015

"Food is our common ground, a universal experience."
James Beard

In a society which is surging towards the globalization in every aspect, there are significant transformations taking place in our consumer culture. As we are into innovations in food-processing, our eating habits are redefined; with genetically modified crops coming into the kitchen, there are a lot of debates and discussions about the consequences and future food patterns. The increased gap between rural-urban lifestyles, the consumption of food is being reduced from ritual to compulsion. Our urban community has developed into a more cosmopolitan culture, which is influencing in our consumption methodology.
Around the Platter is an attempt to envisage these concerns using pictorial sequences culminating with the idea of feed the world.

IMMAGINE

The video Immagine is the story of Eve and the forbidden fruit. The first of many stories of the Old Testament in which food is involved.
A religion story wich takes cultures and immemorial traditions texts and evokes two wonderful trees whose fruits are able to give knowledge and immortality.
Cautionary tale, common to all religions, which sets scenes constant and unfailing links between religion and food, between food and prohibits, between prohibited and transgression, between transgression and punishment.
The use of secrecy, mystery, dogma, and the divine law by religions. A human construction of a system of obstruction against the legitimate hunger for knowledge and freedom.

Barbara Hertiman 2015

Tupi or not Tupi
That its the question.
Based on the Cannibal Manifesto, Tupí or not Tupí reveals the paths of the different realities that converge through alienation.

"Against social reality, dressed and oppressive, defined by Freud – in reality we are complex, we are crazy..."

DADALOOM

Francesca Fini 2015

A surrealist wedding cake, a futurist banquet, a baroque orgy of colors and flavors, a ratatouille of images in which food becomes a dream - or nightmare - and the reflection of schizophrenic diets in the claustrophobic frame of a self-portrait.

ETHER

Lina Alejandra Pulido Barragán 2015

During the process of creating the piece, was always ringing in my consciousness -antinomia- word from which arises Foods Project. This word evoked a questioning of duality, the two sides, the binary.
I thought, Why everything is mediated from a binary thinking? This way of thinking is deeply rooted in our Western culture, where the language, most notably, divided into two poles conception of the world. We tend to binarize the reality; good / bad, black / white, etc. Perhaps, by the need to understand what surrounds us. Perhaps because we have culturally grown in an area where we have fed, so gird our thinking so. So how to modify the / our reality to evoke realities and break binary structures?
At the moment we open our eyes and see, our field captures an image, which can be added to it another; such as: an image of a memory or dream.
Our view, has the ability to juxtapose an image of the landscape that lies before us, which we might call reality, with a past image and even other intangible images. Since, in the instant that all these images are juxtaposed and recomposed in our time actually wraps happening at the same moment; a timelessness that moment and the image itself, which creates possibilities to perceive.
These perceptual scenarios, somehow create a mirror of the reality that can be altered through the layers of temporal images presented to our visuality.
If we close our eyes and our fingers pressed, the brain creates fractal images that model the reality and metaphorically create the image of infinity; alluding to various possibilities of perception.
Fractals and juxtaposed images are those that see through ether as moving paintings, which conceived suggestive scenarios reality. Moving scenarios that are augmented by means of sound art that proposes the video.

H20

SSMIDD 2015

feat. Anastazia Louise Aranaga
H2O is a bipolar molecule. It connects to other H2O-compounds of similar but opposite charges. That's why it appears to be liquid and doesn't loosely float into the sphere. Instead it gives life to everyone and everything around. It purifies itself and others. It rounds up beings towards whatever form they are. It comprises our planet's memory. It mirrors the global society. When we will guide it to flourish, unfold and restructure naturally - then health and wealth will grow, and then the waters smile, and so will we.
